Just Write It

Preparation only takes you so far.

And this is definitely a message for myself, specifically when it comes to writing my screenplay which I’ve been working on the past few months. I’m about to move into my 3rd draft after tending to my outline for weeks and weeks. And right now, like right this second, feels about the time to actually start writing the script again. Meaning, opening Final Draft (not Google Docs for the outline), starting a new screenplay and actually begin screenwriting again.

Now, the other night, I came across a long collection of old notes on my iphone of ideas and contemplations about this script which I could integrate into my outline… or I could just start SCREENWRITING

The truth is, a part of my mind is always going to find an excuse to keep preparing as opposed to taking the leap. This is the resistance we must overcome as artists in order to actually complete the work which we start. It’s certainly a spiritual practice because we’re literally going against our programming. You know the saying, “Mind over matter”? Perhaps this is Spirit over Mind.

Ego, doubt, fear, procrastination, laziness – the forms of resistance

These are the things we must become sensitive to so that we’re aware of when they come up.

If they come up in our process and we notice them prolonging our progress, then journal about it. Write out what you’re feeling and experiencing. Put it under the light.

The greatest act of rebellion against these obstacles is to just do it.

To do the thing that they’re trying to stop you from doing.

Courage is not not experiencing fear. Courage is experiencing fear, but moving forward despite it.

So, just write it. Make it. Create it. Sing it. Draw it. Film it.

Let it be as natural breathing. Your body just does it. It’s automatic. There’s no question about it.

It’s like a bee getting pollen from a flower in the morning. The bee doesn’t overthink whether or not it should get the pollen. The bee just flies on over and does what it was made to do.

You were made for this. This is what you’re meant to do.

There’s actually a very powerful framework of the creative process when you connect it to the flow of nature. When you look out into the world, you see movement everywhere. You see trees waving in the wind, clouds strolling by, birds flying and insects too, the sunrise and sunset, movement in humanity’s activities and infrastructures, cars driving.

This same universal energy that makes the world go round is now moving through you with your work. So all you have to do is allow it to flow. The way you do that is by getting out of your own way. Trust in the current that wants to move.

When you trust it, you believe that it’s connected to something profound. It’s connected to the same movements of the universe you see in the world. And that when you let it move through you, it will indeed continue to flow. There’s a plan that wants to unfold. Just like a seed that’s destined to grow into a tree, so does your work have a purpose.

You feel the roots of your idea, and maybe you get visions of the tree. All you have to do is follow it. Allow it. Let it grow.

There will never be a better time than now.

If the thing is calling to you now, then you have to trust its timing. If it wanted to be manifested in a year from now, then it would have called to you then. But it’s calling to you now.

This is a part of the trust that you must have in it. You have to trust the timing.

Again, there’s always going to be that part of the mind that finds any reason to hold back. So don’t wait for that to go away. Because it won’t.

There’s this beautiful thing in the journey where we have to overcome the resistance in order to become the artist and person we’re meant to become, instead of just conveniently waiting for the resistance to resolve itself and go away.

The work of art is ourself. These creative ideas are just as beneficial to us as they are for the rest of the world. The creative journey brings with it a spiritual evolution that calls on us to look inward and overcome parts of the mind which hold back people all over the globe.

And so as we do the work to overcome these things ourselves, we inspire others to do the same. We do our part in encouraging humanity to choose courage over fear. Dreams over doubt. Love over hate.

So, just write it.

There’s something much greater than you might be seeing right now. All you have to do is trust the nudge that’s trying to guide you. It’s on your side, believe me. It’s on your side.

It’s on the world’s side.

Go do what you were made for.
