Luiza (2023)
Sypnosis: A singer fights for her freedom in a dream-state prison where she must write a sufficient song before time is up.
I knew I wanted my junior film for Advanced Directing class to be about a musician but I had no idea what the plot would be. As I struggled to be decisive on a single idea, I knew the film had to be about this creative process that can feel torturously cyclic – Rewrite. Rewrite. Rewrite. The piece speaks to my views on perfectionism and how it is rooted not in truth, but in fear. The ego strives to protect us and our art from the outer world, but in that it creates a prison that we can only escape by letting go of fear and following our intuition. Stylistically, I was inspired by the cinematography of Donnie Darko and Whiplash. My first experience having a DoP, Andrew Nyaga – a fellow film student, on set not only helped bring my vision to life but taught me many creative lighting skills that I have taken into my DP work on other shoots. Working with actress Luiza Abecia, my girlfriend, was extremely special and rewarding because our close relationship was reflected in our teamwork on set. Despite this being her first big role, she was phenomenal and taught me so much. The film feels more like ours because of how integral she was to the soul of the film. This work opened my eyes to the infinite creativity and willingness of so many students at Rutgers who helped make this short possible. This film is so near and dear to my heart and I love it with all my spirit. I couldn’t be more proud of what I accomplished with my first big short film and grateful for all of the people who helped and lessons I learned that I will take into my future films.
