A reader flips a page.
A dog perks its ears.
A mother holds her daughter’s hand.
A father prepares scrambled eggs and sausage for his two sons as they get ready for school. They have to eat the food in the car, so he puts the eggs and sausage in two red solo cups. He writes “A” in sharpie on one cup, and “J” on the other cup for their names.
A leaf falls from a tree.
The tire of your car pops after you leave your neighborhood. Now you have to find the nearest stop.
Rain pours from the sky.
Lyrics fill the mind of a writer as they strum their guitar.
The glasses of an elderly woman go missing.
The light on the ceiling hums.
You finally overcome your addiction that you’ve been battling with for God knows how long. Every time you relapse, it’s like another discouraging signal to yourself that becomes harder to mentally grasp each time. But you haven’t given up yet. And now you’ve put it behind. This time, deep down inside, you know it’s for good. And you’re so proud of yourself. You feel the delicacy of being a human and being able to experience triumph. You set a goal for yourself and reach it. Now you bask in your own glory. You know what the other side feels like.
A man loses his father.
A mother holds her daughter’s hand for the last time.
A baby is born.
The sky begins to cry.
You read these words.
All of this is art.
And you are caught in this universal web of creation. The web that just keeps going. Your creativity is an extension of this design. And your art illustrates this design in a way that resonates with the individual experiences that you have had in this life.
Seeing this deeper connection between the nature of your art and the art that pervades every moment of your life, helps you facilitate your spiritual connection to the source of this creativity.
As you go about your day, notice the art in every moment.
Notice the textures of your steering wheel as you drive. Notice each bump in the road as your car goes over it. Notice what it’s like to dry your body with a towel after taking a shower. Notice how much that object weighs in your hand as you hold it.
Notice what it’s like to test the capacity of your lungs by inhaling as much breath as you can.
There is an expansion of space everywhere you go as you consciously engage with your environment and being. This conscious interaction is the same process that occurs during your creative process. You are being sensitive to the cosmic matter that’s around you – your thoughts, feelings, inspiration, ideas, location. This is why becoming more present, aware, and conscious throughout your daily moments will help you as a creator.
Write down things into your notebook that you notice. It can be so simple. It can be, “A woman with a giant red umbrella walks down the road.” Or, “a magazine titled, ‘Magnolia’ sits before me in the library’”
It is about noticing the creation that is always all around you. And, again, this creation flows through you. It is responsible for the artwork that you produce. So, grow your relationship to this creation. Become more sensitive to it, in all its forms. Because it has so many forms.
When I bring my camera with me to the woods and take videos of nature, I can pretty much put my camera anywhere and the frame is beautiful. It has little to do with how I frame my camera, and more to do with the beauty that’s already there. You can see the camera as a metaphor for our ability to make artworks, and the woods as a metaphor for the universe at large. We simply capture the beauty that’s already there. We activate it in a certain form that speaks to other souls who experience our art.
We continue the chain of creation that flows through everything around us, and wants to flow through us in a transcendental way we call “creativity”.
The poem at the beginning of this blog is me trying to illustrate this chain of creation and how it literally moves through everything around us. And so what we call, “art”, is really an extension of this universal creation. And in my feeling, this means that everything is art. And we can notice this art in every beat of our lives.
Everything listed in the poem has something in common. They all exist. Everything in the universe is an expression of existence. This expression is the chain of creation that eternally flows. The way I see it, this chain does not start and end when you sit down to work on your art. It is happening. When you’re asleep, it is happening. When you’re awake, it is happening. When you don’t write, it is happening. When you write, it is happening.
It is activated in a different form when we decide to channel our creativity. But it exists always.
Bringing your awareness to this constant, everlong existence and happening of art will help you cultivate your relationship to it. Because now you can open yourself up to more of its truth. And it brings a sense of alignment to yourself, since you’re noticing the harmonious design of creation that moves through yourself and your surroundings.
Seeing more art and more beauty around you always.
This is the way.
