Your Solitude is More Important than you think

I’m about to tell you something that only you will ever be able to experience. No one else in the world could ever touch or feel what this thing is. It is exclusive to you and holds a power that nothing else could possibly amount to.

It’s your solitude.

Your solitude will only ever be experienced by you. Only you know what your solitude is.

In today’s world, I would argue it is harder now more than ever to truly access our solitude. With all of the noise, distractions, addictions, and technological devices at our easy access, we give away our time and attention like it’s nothing.

We surrender the precious engagement that is experiencing our own solitude.

Now I know what you might be thinking. That actually our solitude is happening now more than ever before. That we’re all isolated and alone. That even though we’re scrolling and spending time on our devices, we are still by ourselves. We are still in our solitude.

That’s not what I’m talking about when I say “solitude”. Being by yourself is not the same as being with yourself. In fact, I would say that when we indulge in our devices and distractions, we are running away from ourselves.

We are running away from the silence by filling it with noise. We are running away from ourselves and our life and problems. We are running away from the mirror and instead looking into the digital light.

But this is not solitude.

When was the last time you were still? I mean truly still.

When did you engage with stillness on the level of intentionally putting away any distractions just to be with yourself. Nothing but you, your mind, and silence. And not just you over thinking or worrying about a situation. When were you intentional about getting still and simply being?

If you can’t remember, or you feel it’s been too long, then I call you to spend time in solitude.

Virtually all of our creations immediately around us are fighting for our attention. Everyday we have to make decisions on where we give our attention. Our minds are practically wired by our creations and media to chase. We are wired to chase information and look for new things. All of the answers are made to be in the external world and it is up to us to find them.

If we need an answer, we must look for an outside source. We must ask someone or read something or watch something. We can’t trust ourselves because we’re not in the right state or we’re not qualified enough. And yes, if we just tap into our fears and worries then we can be led astray. But what if we just need to tap into a different part of ourselves? Like I said, our solitude will only ever be experienced by us. Millions will watch a video. Millions with read an article. Millions will read a book. But only one can access what’s within. Which makes the wisdom from solitude inherently unmatched from any device we have now and any device to come in the future.

With our minds constantly in this state of seeking and chasing, it has become a novelty for the mind to just be. In fact, it’s become extremely difficult for the mind to just be. This is why we fill in the silence. This is why we play music, or youtube, or a podcast anytime we do literally anything. Drive. Walk. Fold laundry. Wash the dishes. Have downtime.

This is why we doom scroll.

We need constant engagement with the external world of simulations and information. And this is part of why we haven’t engaged with the internal world of silence. Of solitude. Because it’s hard.

But in our true solitude, there is an inner sanctuary.

It holds a power greater than you can think. Our solitude holds the key to knowing who you are. To sense how you feel about life. How you truly feel.

Let me paint a picture for you and see if you can resonate on some level. A situation happens in your life that makes you feel an intense stressful emotion. Maybe it’s anger or jealousy or annoyance. You react with that emotion and you allow it to drive your plan of actions in order to “solve” the situation. You allow this emotion to drive you for days or even weeks in this situation. Whenever you think about it you get stressed.

Now what if you spent some time in solitude to intentionally see how you truly felt about the situation. Not how your mind or fleeting emotions felt. But your true self. Your true emotions. The feelings from the soul. What would the soul tell you?

Maybe you can only know from true solitude. By truly centering yourself and looking at the situation from a calm state.

This is one of the ways solitude impacts you but I decide to paint this specific picture because I believe this is the dilemma we find ourselves in today.

Our whole life is made of experiences, events, and things to react to. And I would say that most of our reactions are out of our control. We are constantly bouncing from thing to thing to thing, rarely questioning our ways and rarely taking the time to truly reflect on a situation. And this plays in the micro. This plays in the split second decision to whip out your phone when there’s silence and then scroll for 30 minutes.

We react, but we do not truly respond.

And I’m not saying to spend an hour in solitude before you make any decision.

What I am saying is that it’s quite weird that spending an hour or two a day in true solitude is pretty out there in today’s world.

Is it because we aren’t aware of the power that lies in solitude?

And is that because we have never tried it out?

Maybe.

I want you to come back to yourself. And I promise, if you really connect with the power inside, it will elevate your experience in how you deal with the rest of the things in the world.
