The biggest tool you have as an artist is not your camera. It’s not your pencil. It’s not your canvas.
It’s you.
Everything starts with you.
You are the most powerful and reliable source for all that you create. Every piece of technology that you use, whether it’s a pen or a software, will be engineered to craft your creative vision by YOU.
And so because of this, your creative mind/soul is what needs your time and effort. You shouldn’t aim to put all of your emphasis on developing external technologies to advance your work. Your main priority as an artist should be in evolving your creative mind.
You need to work on exploring and growing your relationship to your inner artist – your soul. I promise that your efforts to doing these things will transfer to higher accessibility to the genius ideas within.
You need to spend your day focused on doing the best things for your mind. Think about how your actions and habits are affecting your mental health. How are you cultivating your creative energy? These two things are connected because the more you take care of your mind, you closer you get to the source of your ideas.
The Morning
I want to talk specifically about the morning. How are you spending your morning so that you set your creative mind up for the day in a positive way?
Your immediate actions upon waking are crucial to setting the tone for the day. And this will heavily impact the success of your creative mind growing because your creative mind evolves in the day to day actions.
As an artist, the goal of your morning should be to switch your creative mind on.
The way you start your day creates a domino effect that carries into the events that follow after. You set the pace for the day. So, if you commit to actions in the morning that are healthy and positively stimulating for the creative mind, you will train your creative mind to be active and alert throughout the rest of the idea.
This means
- Being aware for ideas throughout the day
- Noticing small details that can translate to creative ideas
- Being in creative imagination mode
- Being tuned in with your senses throughout the day
You see why the morning is so important for developing your creative mind?
You need to start the day by being PROACTIVE in regards to your creative mind so that it uses the day to evolve. Now how do we do this?
Let’s get practical.
Like I said, this is about your immediate actions upon waking up. This INCLUDES snoozing and sleeping in. Are you oversleeping and making yourself more tired than if you hadn’t snoozed your alarm for 2-3 hours? Rest is vital to your health, outside of being an artist, of course. But, oversleeping is a very real thing. Reflect on your sleeping habits, because they could be training your mind to be in retreat mode as opposed to proactive mode at the start of the day. And, as established, your actions at the start are crucial to the rest.
You want your mind to feel confident to take the day right away and not shy away from it. You want your inner artist to be in explorative mode and engage with life around you… not run away from it.
If sleeping in has to do with poor sleep time at night, then fix your schedule. Set yourself up for a full night of good quality rest so you can get up with more proactive energy upon waking.
Next, what I like to do is meditate immediately upon waking. Before I am exposed to any light, I am full of melatonin which is perfect for a nice, deep yet short meditation. I tell myself that I am switching my creative mind on in order to engage my creativity and imagination. I visualize my day, my goals, and my state of mind/mood.
Sometimes I even get ideas from the dream(s) I had during my sleep. This goes into my next point.
JOURNALING
You need to implement some form of writing/journaling in the morning. This is perfect for engaging your creative mind at the start of the day. Doing a form of creative writing and working with your soul in the morning will force your creative mind to work, telling itself, “today we will be active and aware”.
I mentioned that I get ideas from my dreams during my morning meditation. I recommend that you journal about your dreams in the morning. Not only is this a great way to stimulate your creative mind with creative writing in the morning, but you will explore ideas and answers from the subconscious mind. Dreams are like art house films. If we analyze these pieces of abstract art from the subconscious mind, we will discover hidden themes and ideas that we didn’t realize we needed. This is not only for creative ideas, but answers in general.
Lastly, focus on
physical health.
Your creative energy and overall healthy energy go hand in hand. Are you getting enough sunlight, water, and movement at the start of the day?
Going back to proactivity, doing some form of physical movement is important at the start of the day so that your mind and body are on the same page as being in an active mode in the morning, putting that domino effect throughout the day in your favor. Do yoga, do stretches, do light cardio, go for a walk.
Drink water and get sunlight early and make sure you sustain these throughout the day. You don’t want to be dehydrated without knowing it, and you don’t want to just be inside all day on your laptop or phone.
Focus on consciously deciding how you want to spend your mornings so that they work for you and your creativity.
Your creative mind needs your attention.
You need to evolve it. Ask yourself what you believe would truly be the best way to spend your mornings to make your creative mind be in a proactive state right at the start of the day.
This blog is full of ideas I recommend and use for myself. And you should add onto it. You hold the answers within. These actions will pay off if you implement them. Do it and watch it happen.
I wish the best to you and all of your work!
