Hey artists and creatives, I am going to give you some powerful journal prompts you have to do to get closer to your creativity and artistic voice.
These prompts will help you find out what it is you want to make art about and how your soul wants to express itself through your creativity.
I believe that our deep emotional connections to the things around us are hints as to what it is we want to create. When we connect deeply with something, there is a reason as to why. And exploring this reason and connection can help us understand the language of our soul.
And if we can understand the language of our soul… we can better understand our own creativity.
Here they are:
What is your favorite movie? And what’s your favorite scene from that movie? Why do you think you love this piece of cinema? What do you feel it says about you?
There is a reason your soul resonates with that movie and with that scene. Explore it and find out why that art strikes a chord within you.
What is one of your favorite moments in music from a specific song… is it a lyric? An instrumental part? What does this say about your inner artist? Why are you drawn to this moment?
Music is the geometry of sound. Certain combinations of melody, tone, rhythm, and words can unlock out of body experiences for us. It’s something we can’t really explain but there is something there. Write about a moment that does this to you and explore it.
What is a scene in a film that makes you cry?
Crying is a sign of an emotional connection. Explore this connection you have with this art and what it says about what your soul cares about.
What is a piece of art that gives you a feeling of deja vu? You are inexplicably drawn to it. You don’t know why. Journal about it: What elements of this piece do you feel trigger this familiar feeling in you.
I believe that when we are so drawn to a piece of art that we feel that we almost created it in a past life, this is proof of a spiritual connection. You can’t ignore these. These pieces of art have things to tell us.
Explore why you could be drawn to this art and what it says about your own artistic voice and creativity.
I want to end on this idea because I truly think it’s one of the most profound things in art. Be conscious of which art brings this deja vu feeling out of you. There is a reason for it and the reason hints at something extremely deep as to the nature of art itself. It’s something I’d like to write about in the future. But for now, I want to quote music producer Rick Rubin from his book The Creative Act where he speaks on the source of creativity and what I believe to be connected to this deja vu feeling.
“We begin with everything, everything seen, everything done, everything felt, everything imagined, everything forgotten, and everything that rests unspoken and unthought within us. It may be helpful to think of source as a cloud.
Clouds never truly disappear, they change form.
What makes them appear new is that they are combining differently each time they come back. This is why when we are struck by a new piece of art it can resonate on a deeper level. Perhaps this is the familiar coming back to us in an unfamiliar form.“
